[Lecture on Demand by Startup Institute]

“The Key of Effective Startup Pitch Deck: Flow” - Seung-Il Lee, CEO of PowerPT

On September 11 (Tue), KUBS Startup Institute invited Seung-Il Lee, CEO of PowerPT for a special lecture on ‘The Key to Success in Writing IR Deck and Pitching: Penta-Flow’ at Meeting Room C, located on level 2 of KUBS Main Building. Seung-Il Lee, who is also the President of Korea Presentation Association, participated in ‘Startup IR Pitching Project’ by Foreign Start-up Incubation at the Ministry of Science and ICT. He also held lectures and consultation to organizations. This lecture was the first lecture of

‘2018-2 Lecture on Demand’

series organized by Seung Myung-Ho Center for Entrepreneurship Education. The audience of 20 from 15 startup teams at Iljin Center for Startup Incubation attended the lecture.

Mr. Seung-Il Lee first suggested ‘flow’ as one of the most important presentation techniques. You need to build an efficient startup pitch deck with great flow that attracts investors. He emphasized that “In fact, what most attracts investors is perhaps not the business model itself but its message you would like to deliver - the authenticity.” “Building a story flow is therefore highly important, because you must appeal to the audience of your story within five minutes.” “After all, it is your story, rather than the business plan that investors would like to hear from you.” Mr. Lee stressed that “Remember that consumer’s decision making is not always a rational process – and so does investors’.”

Seung-Il Lee also recommended a few other tips for making a compelling presentation. A presentation is more than just delivering an idea; An effective presentation involves a technique that attracts the audience’s attention. One of the ways can be asking simple questions to the audience. The questions can be thrown at the end of the presentation. Mr. Lee added that “You must take advantage of the pitch deck – you can communicate directly with the audience during the pitch. That is ‘audience flow’, which separates the pitch deck from other forms of delivering ideas.”

After the lecture, one of the attendants Jin-Young Choi, development director at IoPet (KyungHee University, Architectural Engineering ’13), commented that “It was very interesting to know that it is a great idea to prepare the presentation in the consumer’s perspective, rather than investor’s.” “Other practical tips Mr. Lee gave us were also useful, too, such as making a strong impression at the end of the presentation – saying ‘Thank you’ is not enough.”

Each semester, KUBS Startup Institute holds practice-based lecture series ‘Lecture on Demand’ about startups and business venture.
